It has been claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump rejected a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to transfer Iran’s enriched uranium to Russia.
Speaking to Axios, a U.S. official said Washington’s main priority is to ensure that the uranium is secured.
The official noted that Putin had not raised the proposal for the first time, emphasizing the U.S. position by saying, “We need to see that the uranium is secured.”
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also stated on Friday that the United States has several options to bring Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium under control.
Hegseth said Washington would welcome it if Iran voluntarily handed over the stockpile, but added that Tehran has not been willing to do so in negotiations.
“I’m not going to outline to the world what we can do or how far we can go. But we certainly have options,” he said.
Trump, however, said in an interview with Fox News Radio that controlling Iran’s enriched uranium is not currently among his top priorities.
The U.S. president added:
“We are not focused on that right now, but we could focus on it at some point.”
