Apple is preparing for a comprehensive innovation on Siri with the iOS 27 update. Aiming to transform the personal assistant into a more capable chat bot, the company aims to compete with its competitors such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with this step.
With the new version, Siri is designed to work largely through Dynamic Island. A special Siri application will also be available for users for the first time.
New interface and chat features for Siri
Siri will appear as a pill-shaped animation on Dynamic Island when activated via voice command or side button. The answers to the questions will appear on a transparent scorecard.
When users swipe this card, they will be able to switch to an iMessage-like chat mode. This mode will also support small cards containing information such as weather, notes, and upcoming appointments.
The special Siri application developed will allow reviewing past conversations and starting new conversations. The application will include a grid structure with summaries of past conversations, a search bar and a new chat start button.
Users will be able to communicate with Siri both voice and text through this new application. Additionally, support for uploading images and documents will be added to the application.
Swiping down from the top middle of the screen will open a system-wide search interface. This search bar, which appears on Dynamic Island, will provide a similar structure to Spotlight Search and bring more advanced results.
Siri will be able to provide detailed answers to user questions with the data it receives from the web. Answers will include bullet points and large images.
Third-party integration and other innovations
Although users use Siri by default in the search bar, they will be able to switch to other chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini if they wish. Apple also plans to allow third-party AI services to be selected as default for Apple Intelligence features.
The Image Playground application will also be overhauled with iOS 27. The new interface will include a change definition feature for editing created images while offering fewer control options.
Apple is conducting tests on new models that can produce more realistic visuals. As a result of these studies, new visual creation capabilities are expected to come with iOS 27.
Various changes are also planned to be made for the Camera, Photos, Wallet and Shortcuts applications. iOS 27 is expected to be introduced at the WWDC 2026 event on June 8 and will be available to users in September.
