It has emerged that Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a diplomatic note to NATO member Bulgaria last month, warning against allowing U.S. military aircraft to use Bulgarian airports.
Speaking at a press conference today, Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raykov confirmed that Iran had sent a diplomatic note and emphasized that diplomatic relations between the two countries continue.
Raykov stated, “Bulgaria is not at war, and no warplanes are being deployed through Bulgaria to participate in military operations. Our parliament has not adopted any decision supporting military actions in the Strait of Hormuz region.”
Emphasis on NATO Deployment
Reports in the Bulgarian media at the end of February indicated that several U.S. military aircraft had landed at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport. Officials explained that these aircraft were present as part of NATO’s forward deployment activities.
