WhatsApp is testing a new in-app label that indicates whether a chat room has end-to-end encryption (E2EE).
WABetaInfo discovered this label in the latest Android beta version. According to the publication, this label will only appear below the name of the person or group if the conversation is encrypted by the company’s “Signal Protocol”. The aim is for the text to serve as a “visual confirmation” that external entities cannot read what they say or listen to their phone calls.
WABetaInfo also says that the text will disappear after a few seconds and will replace the Last Seen indicator. It is not currently known whether the two lines will change or whether Last Seen will permanently replace the E2EE label. While this label may not seem like something significant as it only consists of a lock icon and four words, it is quite important considering WhatsApp’s collaboration with third-party applications.
The tech giant published a report on March 6th on the Engineering at Meta blog detailing how interoperability will work in Europe. In 2022, the EU adopted the Digital Markets Act, which includes new rules forcing major messaging platforms to allow users to communicate with third-party services.
