Owning one of the most expensive Mercedes-Benz models will now be easier. CEO Ola Kallenius said in a statement that a smaller, cheaper and fully electric version of Mercedes’ iconic G-Wagon will be produced.
The “baby” G-Class EV will be “fun to drive” in a compact size.
Smaller, cheaper electric Mercedes G-Wagon gets approval.
Mercedes-Benz first introduced the G-Class EQG concept, “an all-electric model variant of the utilitarian off-road icon”, at IAA Mobility in 2021.
The electric model was a G-Class, showcasing design cues typically found in the series and adding modern upgrades for the EV era. Two years after its debut, Kallenius confirmed on Sunday at the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich that the model will have a little sibling.
According to German newspaper Automobilwoche, Mercedes has been kicking around the idea of a smaller electric G-Wagon for several years.
Even during the reign of long-term leader Dieter Zetsche, who served until 2019, there were rumors that the brand wanted to release a budget-friendly version.
According to Kallenius, now is the time. The report states that the smaller electric variant may be called “g-Class” with a lowercase “g”.
It is claimed that 4-wheel drive will be available and the model will promise an enjoyable driving experience.
The full-size electric G-Class EQG is expected to be launched next year. However, the smaller variant isn’t expected to launch until 2026 at the earliest.
