A significant fire broke out at the renowned Bryant Park holiday market in Midtown Manhattan on Friday morning, causing damage to multiple business kiosks and sending thick plumes of smoke high into the air, visible from miles away. The incident prompted a swift response from the Fire Department, which received reports of the blaze on the south side of the park shortly before 9:30 a.m.
Firefighters worked quickly and effectively, bringing the fire under control by 10 a.m. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries related to the incident. An investigation has been launched by the fire marshal to determine the cause of the fire.
The Bryant Park holiday fair, officially known as the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park, is one of New York City’s largest seasonal markets, attracting approximately four million visitors each year. Shoppers enjoy browsing through dozens of small kiosks that fill the park, while also partaking in ice skating, curling, and a variety of food options.
The market is scheduled to operate through January 5, with hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends, as stated on its official website. By noon on the same day as the fire, most of the market’s shops and the ice rink had reopened, according to a spokeswoman. She noted that those kiosks not affected by the fire were expected to resume business later in the day.
Videos capturing the chaotic scene circulated on social media, showing the rapid response to the fire. In one video, a man can be heard shouting, “Get out!” and “Let’s go!” as flames engulf what appears to be several kiosks. Another video depicts about five firefighters bravely approaching the fire to contain it.
This incident follows another recent fire at the Herald Square holiday market, located approximately six blocks south of Bryant Park. That fire resulted in the destruction of several holiday booths and left one firefighter with serious injuries.
